Business Owners, Speak Out!

May 21, 2014 by Molly Overman

Citizen comment hearings about Seattle’s proposed $15/hr. minimum wage happen 3x over the next week.

This may be your last chance to speak up. As a business owner you probably understand that increasing the wages of any of your minimum wage employees to $15/hr. will harm your bottom line – and depending on your business model, it could put you out of business. This is your chance to be active in legislation directly related to your bottom line. The nation is watching.

The Seattle City Council public comment hearings are held at the City Council Chambers:
May 22 at 12:00 p.m.
May 27 following the 2:00 p.m. city council meeting
May 29 at 9:00 a.m.

Insurance Referral for Seattle Area Businesses

January 24, 2013 by jbw@bowerslaw.com

As an advisor to business, I am frequently asked to recommend insurance purchases for clients. While I have general knowledge about insurance and risk, I think business owners should consider obtaining this kind of information from a completely independent knowledgeable insurance consultant who is not making them a sale.

I want to introduce you to Dan Weedin, whom I have known for about 7 years now. Dan is an independent insurance consultant—NOT an insurance salesman. A former insurance agent for 16 years, Dan uses his extensive knowledge of risk assessment and reduction in a completely different way.

Acting as a consultant, Dan can help you analyze exactly what kinds of insurance your business may need. Dan can also shop a client’s insurance needs to find the most competitively priced packages from reputable insurance brokers. Dan’s fees are fixed and predictable. The NLRB And Your Small Business

January 14, 2013 by jbw@bowerslaw.com

Last year I wrote in my Tips From the Trenches newsletter warning about the “new” NLRB – a federal agency that once focused on union issues at large corporations but that is now eyeing smaller business (i.e. those with less than 50 employees). Here’s a link to an article that does a good job of warning you about issues that are ripe for regulatory interference at your small business.

Your Digital Legacy

January 5, 2013 by jbw@bowerslaw.com

Are Facebook, Twitter or similar social networking sites replacing the paper-and-glue scrapbook and photo album in your home? If your estate planning documents do not specifically address digital content, your entire online memory album, messages, personal journals, and photos could disappear at your death without a legal means of obtaining the information by your loved ones. I recommend having an attorney draft a Codicil to your Last Will & Testament that will have carefully drafted language reflecting exactly the scope of your intent to pass on (or not!) your digital content. New Year Business Considerations

January 3, 2013 by jbw@bowerslaw.com

What You Need to Know About ObamaCare and Your Business
Happy New Year, Business Owner! Just think, exactly one year until full implementation of ObamaCare will wreak havoc on our economy. One oddity will be the definition of FTE, full time equivalent, employees. In the new normal of ObamaCare, a worker working 30 hours per week will be considered FTE. Expect many more employers to use part-time employees to get by.
Of course, the slow pain of full implementation of ObamaCare will start much earlier –throughout all of 2013—as employers of more than 50 FTE employees determine how they will deal with the budget hit the legislation will impose. Actuarial and tax experts are estimating the financial hit to employers to be equivalent to a $2/hr. raise for every employee.
Small employers with less than 50 FTE will not escape the pain—they will likely “pay” for ObamaCare in other ways. Already, 12% of employers with less than 50 FTE have “have either had their health insurance plans terminated or been told that their plan would not be available in the future” according to a comprehensive study by the National Federation for Independent Business (NFIB). More on the NFIB study here: http://www.nfib.com/research-foundation/surveys/healthcare-year1
Like many small business owners, I will be wistful for Auld Lang Syne ( for old, old times) this New Years.
